Meatless Monday….for the Culturally Challenged

Don't Have a Cow

This is the post that I didn’t think I would have to write. But, in my Facebook status yesterday, I benignly referred to Meatless Monday.  And my friends did not know to what I was referring.  They live in podunk PA towns like Clarks Summit, Scranton, and Mansfield, so they are to be excused.  But, “the little red haired girl”, aka “the vicor’s wife” grew up in Brooklyn, NY, with all that culcha’. “The little red haired girl” is not to be forgiven. True, she keeps moving west and is now in far away O-hi-o, but she still has the Brooklyn accent, so she should, in an attempt to not shame her upbringing, keep up.

So, here is how it works.  On Mondays, one is to refrain from eating all animal products. I did not make up the rules.  Meatless Monday has a website, and once something has a website it is official. Butter, an essential nutrient, will be excused and may be substituted for tofu in any recipes. For those of you stopping by for dinner next Monday, I had planned to make Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, but I have changed my mind.  We will be having Pasta with Eggplant Sauce.  And butter.

Friends, please make a more concerted effort to keep up.  Next thing you will be telling me is that you’ve never heard of Wheatless Wednesday.

  1. I didn’t know anything about Wheatless Wednesday but have been observing Troutless Tuesday for many years.

  2. Count me among the ignorant. I’d never heard of any of this before. What is the point? Why would I give up meat on any day… let alone a Monday? What about fish. Many vegetarians don’t consider fish a meat, you know.

ba ha ha. I grew up living the simple life of a country girl in a place that is decidedly not progressive. Where I come from, good common folk would view Meatless Monday as plainly unnecessary and a little kooky. They would view this idea with the same seriousness as Tireless Tractor Thursdays and Walk Backwards Wednesdays. In fact, they would probably feel a little sorry for people who seemed to have so little to do and so little common sense that they would dream up such a weird concept and announce it with a straight face. So I hope I can be forgiven for being handicapped by my upbringing. At least enough so that I get invited to the eggplant thingy next Monday. I’ll bring some wheatgrass or hummus or something as an appetizer. ; )

We had salmon pattys , buttered egg noodles with fried onions and a salad. Is fish meatless? And ,Susan , that sauce looked delicious!!

We have meatless Monday, Veggie Vednesday, and Fruity Friday. And when we do eat meat, it’s mostly chicken.
The red stuff is too darned expensive to eat every day of the week!!!
