Thyme Cough Syrup Recipe Ingredients
Dahlia – While this ingredient is optional, you may want to consider that dahlia is more than just a pretty face. Ancient cultures have used both the flowers and tubers as food and medicine. The flowers are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory to gently support the body and immune system as it heals. In my case, I used red dahlia, giving my cough syrup its brilliant color.
If you don’t grow your own, search Etsy for dried dahlia petals. Be sure to ask how they are grown since you are using them for medicine.
Lemon Thyme – Lemon thyme is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and decongesting properties. It has also been used to strengthen the lungs, making it an excellent herb for treating coughs and sore throats. If you can’t find fresh lemon thyme, you may substitute regular thyme, keeping in mind that it has a stronger, less citrusy flavor.
Ginger – The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger can relieve a cough or sore throat by reducing inflammation and pain. It has also been used to boost immunity.
Cinnamon – Cinnamon may act as an expectorant, making it easier to cough up mucus, helping to clear your airways.
Raw Honey – Raw honey has natural antimicrobial properties and acts as a natural cough suppressant. It also coats the throat, reducing irritation.
Lemon – Lemon juice provides vitamin C and helps thin mucus, making it easier to expel.

Dahlia and Lemon Thyme Cough Syrup
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup fresh dahlia petals, optional or 4 T dried
- 1/3 cup fresh lemon thyme leaves or 2 T dried
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly peeled and grated ginger root
- 1/2 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 cup raw honey
- 1 1/2 cup filtered water
- juice of 1 lemon
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dahlia Petals and Lemon Thyme
- Ensure the dahlia petals and lemon thyme are fresh and organic. Rinse them gently under cold water to remove any dirt or insects.
- Use a clean cloth or paper towel to dry the petals and thyme.
- Pluck the thyme leaves and the dahlia petals from their stems.
Step 2: Infuse the Water
- In a small saucepan, bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil.
- Add the lemon thyme leaves, grated ginger, and 1/2 of a cinnamon stick to the simmering water for 10- 15 minutes. This will allow the herbs and spices to release their medicinal properties.
Step 3: Add Dahlia Petals
- After simmering the herbs and spices, remove the saucepan from the heat and add the dahlia petals and stir in gently. The darker the petals the more flavor it will have.
- Cover the saucepan and let the dahlia petals steep in the warm infusion for 15 minutes. Dahlia petals add a mild, sweet flavor and beneficial plant compounds.
Step 4: Strain the Mixture
- Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain all the liquid into a clean bowl. Compost the petals, thyme, ginger, and 1/2 cinnamon stick.
- Let the infused liquid cool to a lukewarm temperature before adding the raw honey. You want it cool enough to preserve the beneficial enzymes in the honey.
Step 5: Add Raw Honey and Lemon
- Once the liquid has cooled to lukewarm, not hot, stir in 1/2 cup of raw honey. Mix well until fully dissolved.
- For extra vitamin C and a refreshing boost, add the juice of one fresh lemon and stir.
Step 6: Store the Syrup
- Pour the cough syrup into a sterilized glass jar with a lid. Make sure the jar is clean and dry.
- Label the jar with the contents and the date it was made.
Step 7: Storage and Use
- Store the cough syrup in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Honey acts as a natural preservative, but keeping it chilled will extend its shelf life.
- Honey can settle; stir before using.
- May also be added to warm tea or warm water for extra comfort.Â
Dosage
- Adults take 1 tablespoon of the syrup every few hours as needed to soothe a cough or sore throat.Â
- Children over 1 year old take ½ teaspoon every few hours.Â
- *Babies younger than 1 year old should not be given anything with honey.*
