Whether you have 100 acres, or just a rooftop, your piece of property is your homestead. Maybe you have flocks of chickens and herds of cows, or perhaps it’s just a pot on the balcony where you grow herbs. For me, it’s 1/4 acre in small town America where I grow as much food as I can. It’s all good!
We’re doing this is because we want to be good stewards of the earth, and take care of the bodies that God has given us, right? It’s important to us homesteaders, whatever the size, to keep it clean and take care of our animals, and our plants without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, without feed that contains antibiotics and GMO ingredients, and without pharmaceuticals whenever possible.
I agree, it’s not always easy, but there is help out there! Last night I read by Jill Winger. You probably know Jill from her blog, The Prairie Homestead. I read her eBook, and my reaction was “YES”!
Jill was a veterinary technician, and treated animals, and raised her own animals “by the book”. Routine vaccinations, commercial feed, and treating symptoms, not causes. Little by little, she started to move towards more natural and healthy ways to feed her family and treat their illnesses. And she finally realized that her farm animals deserved the same.
is the culmination of much of what Jill has learned over the years. Making home remedies that really work when her critters get cuts and scrapes. Finding alternatives to bleach to disinfect her chicken coop. Coming up with GMO, soy and antibiotic-free feed recipes. Using essential oils in her garden. And battling weeds and pests without chemicals. All of the things you are eager to implement on your homestead.
I’m anxious to try many of her recipes in my garden, especially those with essential oils to repel pests and ward off disease. And I love using fish emulsion in my garden, so I definitely plan to try Jill’s recipe to make my own.
I wholeheartedly recommend eBook. There are 200 pages filled with 40 natural homesteading recipes. Really, check it out. You can even download a free preview of the eBook.

Hi Susan! Nice post! I agree, it’s about being good stewards of our bodies and the land God has given us! It’s a journey and it takes time to learn along the way! I love learning, especially from blogs like this! Thanks for sharing about Jill’s book. I can’t get one right now but I’m curious about the fish emulsion recipe. Would be interesting to know how to make it. Keep up the good work! Have a great week! Blessings from Bama!
